Chindi, by Jack McDevitt
This is the third in the Priscilla Hutchins series. A blip of some kind of communication signal was picked up out in far off territory of outer space, and a group of people from the First Contact Society have hired Hutch to take them out there to see if they can find that signal and its location. Not only do they find it, but they find it relays to a chain of satellites that spreads across the galaxy and into another one. They discover new planets, a dead world destroyed by nuclear war, a living world with primitive but intelligent life, and an interesting single dwelling on a moon between two ringed gas giants. It is here they discover the mysterious chindi, some kind of space ship that has become a flying time capsule of the universe's civilizations. They get on board, and as the last travelers are leaving, the ship takes off with one of the passengers. Hutch must find a way to chase it down and get him off the ship before his air supply runs out. Can she do it?
I love this series so much. I really think it should be made into a tv or movie series. It's exciting to the very end!
